Loving God, help me center my heart and mind in Your presence. Let me find peace and stillness as I seek to understand and embrace the journeys of others. Grant me the wisdom and compassion to honor each person’s unique path and reflect Your love in all I do. Amen.
CONVERSTION FOR REFLECTION
Woman: Celebrating Strength, Wisdom, and Influence
For May, I decided to preach on the theme “Growing Young: 6 Essential Strategies to Help Young People Discover and Love Your Church,” written by Kara Powell, Jake Mulder, and Brad Griffin. For Mother’s Day, I chose chapter 7, “Be the Best Neighbors: Loving and Shaping Your World Well,” and the Bible passage was Proverbs 31:10-31. The complete list of Core Commitments did not make the sermon, so I planned to put them in today’s “Didactic Diary,” but low and behold, only one of the Core Commitment made it here, which is “Patient neighbors respect the journey as much as the destination.”
Let me first start by saying Proverbs 31:10-31 describes the qualities and virtues of an excellent or virtuous woman. I call her “The Strong Woman,” following the Anchor Bible Commentary. This passage focuses on a woman’s character, actions, and attributes rather than her physical appearance or features. I believe the omission of physical looks in this passage serves a purpose and conveys four important messages.
Emphasizing Inner Beauty: By not mentioning physical looks, the passage highlights the significance of inner beauty and character. It emphasizes that true excellence and worth come from wisdom, kindness, diligence, and fear of the Lord rather than external appearance. The beauty of a person should be found in their heart and conduct rather than their outward appearance.
Avoiding Superficial Judgments: The passage encourages us to move beyond superficial judgments by focusing on character rather than physical looks. It reminds us that true value and worth are not determined by external beauty, which is subjective and can fade over time. Instead, the passage directs attention to enduring virtues that have a lasting impact.
Inclusivity and Universality: [This is my favorite, especially after some of the feedback I received after the sermon] By not specifying physical features, the passage becomes applicable to women of diverse appearances and cultures. It avoids setting narrow standards of beauty that could exclude or marginalize individuals who may not fit those standards. The virtues described in Proverbs 31 can be pursued and exhibited by women from all walks of life, regardless of their physical attributes.
Fostering Holistic View of Women: The absence of physical descriptions allows the passage to present a holistic view of women, focusing on their roles and contributions to society. It recognizes and celebrates the multi-faceted nature of women, including their intelligence, strength, industriousness, compassion, and influence. This encourages a broader appreciation of women’s worth beyond physical appearance alone.
I will now turn to one of the virtuous characters of the Proverbs 31 woman found in the book “Growing Young” chapter 7 and its implication for you, the individual, and the Church universal. Patient neighbors respect the journey as much as the destination. This commitment is about being patient with ourselves and others as we work towards achieving our goals. In Proverbs 31:17, the strong and virtuous woman is described as “girding herself with strength and making her arms strong.” This demonstrated that she is patient and works diligently over time to achieve her goals. In our faith, we learn to embrace the journey as much as the destination. In the process of growth, learning, and transformation, we find meaning and purpose. Just as Jesus valued the disciples’ growth journey, the Church and Christians are called to walk alongside others, offering support and encouragement throughout their spiritual journeys.
Implication for You, Implication for the Church
The Church and Christians are called to create environments that foster growth and honor the individual journeys of each person. We should cultivate spaces of understanding, patience, and empathy where people can explore their faith, ask questions, and wrestle with doubts. By respecting and valuing the journeys of others, we reflect Christ’s love and become catalysts for personal and collective transformation. However, if the implication of respecting the journey as much as the destination is ignored, it can have several negative consequences for the Church and Christians, of which I will list four.
Superficial Spirituality: Ignoring the journey can lead to a focus solely on achieving certain metrics or external markers of faith. This can result in a shallow and performative spirituality, emphasizing appearances rather than genuine personal growth and transformation.
Judgmental and Exclusive: Neglecting the journey may lead to a judgmental attitude towards those at different stages or having different perspectives on their faith journey. This can create an exclusive environment where individuals who do not conform to a particular mold are marginalized or rejected, hindering their spiritual growth and discouraging authenticity.
Lack of Empathy and Support: Without recognizing the importance of the journey, there is a risk of neglecting individuals’ emotional and spiritual needs. People may struggle silently, feeling unsupported or misunderstood, as their unique struggles and questions are not acknowledged or addressed. This can result in a lack of genuine community and hinder the development of deep, meaningful relationships within the Church.
Stagnation and Stifled Growth: When the journey is disregarded, there is a tendency to become fixated on rigid doctrines or traditions without allowing room for personal exploration and growth. This can limit individuals’ spiritual development, hinder their ability to deepen their relationship with God and stifle the potential for fresh insights and understanding.
To avoid these negative implications, You and the Church must embrace and honor each person’s journey. By cultivating an environment of acceptance, understanding, and support, individuals can feel safe to explore their faith, grapple with doubts, and experience genuine transformation. This approach encourages a vibrant, inclusive, and authentic Christian community that respects and values the unique paths of individuals while keeping sight of the ultimate destination of drawing closer to God.

Have you ever experienced judgment or exclusion within a faith community? How did it affect your spiritual journey, and what can be done to create a more inclusive environment?
In what ways can you actively support and encourage others in their spiritual journeys? How can you be a patient neighbor who respects both the process and the destination?
PRAYING FOR OTHERS
Loving God, we acknowledge our shortcomings and seek Your forgiveness. We confess that, at times, we have been too focused on outward appearances, neglecting the importance of inner character and growth. As a result, we have judged and excluded others, failing to respect their journeys. Forgive us, Lord, and help us create communities that embrace and value each person’s path.
Assured of Your grace and mercy, we offer prayers for all those in need. We pray for those who are struggling silently, feeling unsupported or misunderstood. Grant them comfort and the assurance of Your presence. We pray for those who have experienced spiritual stagnation and stifled growth. Renew their passion for You and open their hearts to new insights and understanding.
We also lift up those hurt by judgment and exclusion within the Church. Heal their wounds and guide us towards a more inclusive and accepting community. Help us cultivate empathy and support for one another, fostering deep relationships built on love and understanding.
Bless the Church, Lord, with a spirit of patience, compassion, and a genuine desire to walk alongside others. May it be known as a community that values and honors the diverse journeys of individuals, all while keeping our eyes fixed on the ultimate destination of drawing closer to You. Amen.
