The video below dramatizes a scene from John chapter eight. Jesus tells a crowd that he is going where they cannot follow, and they mistake him immediately, wondering aloud whether he means to leave the country or to end his own life. Their confusion is the ordinary result of hearing a divine claim with human ears. Jesus answers it the way he often answers confusion in John’s gospel. He points back to where he came from: “I have been telling you from the beginning.” He is the same word God has been speaking from the beginning, now arrived in a body the crowd can see and still misread.
That word is concrete. Jesus tells the same crowd that if they hold to his teaching, they will know the truth, and the truth will set them free, because everyone who sins is already a slave to something (John 8:31-34). The image of sin tying us in knots names something real: old patterns and old shame we did not choose and cannot untie by effort alone. Jesus offers himself as the truth the knot cannot hold against. A few verses later, John states the promise plainly: if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed (John 8:36). That is who this video is asking you to consider: the one whose own word reaches the knot and undoes it.
