Salt & Light Guided Meditation

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:13-16 NIV

Today, instead of a traditional reflection, we will engage in a spiritual practice that is deeply rooted in the teachings of Jesus following his reflection on the Beatitudes, inviting us to be the light and salt of the world. This practice will help us connect with the historical context of the text and apply its teachings to our lives today.

Task 1: Setting the Scene

  1. Invite participants to sit comfortably with their eyes closed or gazing downward.
  2. Instruct them to take a slow, deep breath in through their nose for a count of 3 (silently counting in their heads).
  3. Have them hold their breath for a comfortable moment (1-2 seconds).
  4. Instruct the participants to release the breath slowly through their mouth for a count of 4.
  5. Encourage them to repeat this cycle 2-3 times, focusing on the sensation of calmness washing over them with each exhale.

Now – Imagine you are sitting on a hillside, listening to Jesus as He teaches His disciples.

Task 2: Reflection on Salt

Hand each person a grain of salt! [This can be done as people enter the space for contemplation/worship]

  1. Imagine Jesus looking at you, saying, ‘You are the salt of the earth.
  2. Picture yourself as the of salt, ordinary yet powerful.
  3. With your eyes closed, feel the grain of salt in your hand.
  4. Picture it clearly in your mind. It looks tiny and lifeless, almost like a puzzle piece that doesn’t quite fit.
  5. Now, imagine letting that grain of salt fall from your hand onto dry, unfruitful soil and as it touches the ground, something amazing happens. A shiver runs through the earth. The lifeless soil starts to crack open.
  6. Tiny green blades of grass push through the cracks, reaching for the sky. A single seed, nurtured by the minerals in the salt, begins to grow. —
  7. Within each of us lies the potential for similar transformation.

Pause for 30 seconds

Application: Consider the distractions, temptations, and influences in our 21st century that can pull us away from living a Christ-centered life. Think about the ways we can stay true to our faith and the teachings of Jesus, ensuring that we bring purity, truth, and growth into our communities. Take a moment to consider your answer.

Task 3: Reflection on Light

Give each person a tea light [This can be done as people enter the space for contemplation/worship]

Now, imagine Jesus saying, ‘You are the light of the world.’ Turn on your LED candle.

Visualize a bright, warm light within you. This light is pure and guides you through darkness.

See yourself as this light, just being present and shining.

The light does not need to do anything but be itself, and everything around it is illuminated.

Picture yourself shining in the world, clarifying confusion, revealing truth, and exposing evil and sin, just by being there.

Reflect on how you can embody this light in your daily life, simply by being present and reflecting Christ’s purity and truth.

Pause for 30 seconds

Application: Think about one way you can let your light shine this week.

Task: Bringing It Together

Hold these reflections in your heart, imagine the salt and light within you combining to create a powerful force for good. You are called to be both—salt that enriches and light that illuminates. Together, we can make a significant impact in our world.

As we open our eyes and come back to this space, remember that you carry the salt and light of Christ within you. Go forth and let the light shines and the salt nourishes.
